About Helena, Montana

Helena was established in 1875 as the capitol of Montana. At 4062 feet in elevation, it is surrounded by mountains at the base of the continental divide. “The Queen City of the Rockies” was initially developed through gold mining in the 1800’s. The Last Chance Gulch mining claim brought gold miners from all over the world. It is said that more millionaires lived in Helena, than any other location west of the Mississippi during the gold rush. It is evident in the mansion district of Helena. For about 2 square miles, beautiful Victorian mansions are still in pristine condition today. The greater Helena area has a population of 57,916 people. It is an economy on the rise.

Helena has a great employment base. The capitol brings many State and Local government positions. It is also home to St. Peters Hospital. This is one of the largest medical facilities in Montana. The Hospital is currently being expanded to accommodate the new growth. Costco, Lowes, Home Depot, and many others have recently made a home in Helena. Construction workers are in very high demand as well.

Helena is BEAUTIFUL. Helena National Forest surrounds the city. There are four lakes to choose from in our area. In twenty miles in any direction, you will find fantastic scenery. Canyon Ferry is the largest lake. At about 26 miles long and up to 200 feet deep, it can accommodate large boats as well as runabouts. North of Helena is the historic Lewis and Clark expedition found, Gates of the Mountains, will surely please your eyes. In a narrow canyon with 200 foot cliffs on either side, and wildlife from Bears to Mountain Goats., it is difficult not to be awe struck. Meriwether Lewis named it the “Gates of the Mountains” on their expedition. As they walked closer to what appeared to be the end of the lake, the canyon seemed to “open” as the lake took a sharp left turn. It opened to another 7 miles of majestic scenery. There is also a ski resort about 18 miles from Helena. Great Divide ski area has runs for everyone. It is a family run business to this day. Let the kids get great lessons from great people, as you enjoy your day on the snow!

This is a wonderful place to raise your children. Our school system in Helena is top shelf. A kindergarten teacher at Central Elementary, won “National Kindergarten School teacher of the year” in the nineties. He still teaches today. There are many activities for the kids and the family to do together. Hiking, Fishing, Camping, and Hunting are a short drive away. The Great Divide ski area even has a bus up and back from the resort on the weekends for the children. Crime rates in the area are very low in comparison to the national average.

Come and see why Helena ranks seventh in the most desirable micropolitan cities to live in for the entire United States. From Coldwell Banker and Appaloosa Development, we are proud to welcome you to Helena!
